Come be our new Social Worker!
Neighbor by Neighbor is a small, but dynamic non-profit organization located in southwest Michigan. We connect the most vulnerable residents of SW Berrien County with resources and services to address immediate needs, while facilitating greater independence through targeted programs and services.
The Social Worker position is part of our case management team that delivers high-quality services to vulnerable populations. This position is in person at the Neighbor by Neighbor office, with some travel required around Southwest Berrien County.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Answers Neighbor by Neighbor phone, return phone calls and promptly respond to emails, voicemails, all generally within one day.
- Meets Neighbor by Neighbor clients in the Neighbor by Neighbor office or in public places that are convenient to the clients such as libraries, churches, coffee shops, etc. When necessary, meet clients in their homes bringing one trained volunteer or staff member along.
- Completes intake questionnaires and initial assessments of stated needs for each client. Provide referrals as appropriate and encourage client to follow up.
- Works with clients seeking financial assistance through Neighbor by Neighbor direct services following established guidelines.
- Provide appropriate client services for Neighbor by Neighbor clients, including, but not limited to: intensive case management services; advocacy for clients experiencing bureaucratic and other barriers; identification of clients appropriate for mentoring services; referrals to appropriate providers; and, where feasible, response in “real time” to eviction notices, utility shut offs, housing crises and other emergencies; and appropriate follow up on all case matters.
- Works with Service Coordinator to publicize new resources and programs on our website, social media and in newsletters, as well as in other community and organization outlets.
- Enters all necessary detailed data into the Charity Tracker software program.
- Complies with all federal, state, and local standards for professional social workers (e.g., mandated reporting, client confidentiality).
- Builds rapport and communicates effectively and efficiently with the Executive Director, Board, clients, volunteers, staff, providers and funders.
- Collaborates on grant proposals, client calls, meetings with appropriate stakeholders, including funders and volunteers.
- Stays updated in training from the Department of Health & Human Services to be able to enroll clients in various public assistance programs.
- Continually seeks ongoing professional development and/or makes regular reports to or check-ins with another social worker.
- Attends meetings and arrives at the Union Pier office on time.
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential Physical Functions
- Must be able to regularly lift or move at least 25 pounds and occasionally move or lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to effectively and efficiently communicate both in writing and orally.
- Continual standing, moving, walking or sitting for several consecutive hours during shift.
- Continual talking in person or on the phone during shift.
- Able to commute in all weather conditions and has reliable transportation.
Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field.
- Maintains membership in an appropriate professional organization such as National Association of Social Work.
- At least 1 year of experience in a rural social services or other social work environment preferred.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency including, but not limited to Microsoft Office and data management systems. Fluency with Charity Tracker software preferred.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality.
- Compassionate and empathetic approach to working with vulnerable populations.
Compensation:
This position offers up to 40 hours weekly, at an hourly rate between $25.00 and $35.00, depending on qualifications and experience. Neighbor by Neighbor also offers a retirement plan with an employer match.
